The Guts of the CT Banjo
Due to the overwhelming response by my sister and Chad.... here are a few pics of how the banjo came together... it needs some improvements but doesn't sound too dang bad for the Swiss Family Cookie Tin Dingwop Prototype....
Here is the bridge... a bolt that I ground off the bottom end of the head so it would lay flush on the tin....
The inside of the banjo.... nice place to store your goodies/contraband/dingwop/etc. etc. You see the neck goes through the tin, all the way to the back of the tin where it is held by screws, which, in turn, hold the neck to the body and provides a way to hitch up the strings....

You can see the 4 wood screws.... could use just about any screws I would suppose... just the ones I had handy...
And the "headstock" if you can call it that.... I used tuning pegs I had from an old guitar... a bolt for the nut. The neck is a chunk of maple I scored from the woodshop at work - fretless of course... which is cool because you can get that nice slide into and out of notes... so this dingwop cost me zero dollars to construct.... ooops, I take that back, I bought the tin from Goodwill for 49 cents!
the things I need to improve upon.... pay a bit more attention to the headstock portion... I just hacked it out with a handsaw... could have made it much nicer than it is....
The neck portion INSIDE the tin needs to be cut out like ------i_________i---
if that makes sense.... basically the neck can't be sitting against the top of the tin - because the tin needs to resonate... with the neck body against it, it doesn't work so much.... I did hack it out but not as well as I should have....
Buy some freakin' strings.... I had some old used up acoustic guitar strings laying around - if I had a set I could have strung it up proper.... anyway...
The cut out in the tin body could have been a bit more percise and attached to the neck itself...which it isn't....

The Cookie Tin Banjo Prototype
So I stumbled across some crazy cat on the ole internet playing a cookie tin banjo.... which is just that, a homemade banjo-type dingwop made with a cookie tin.
So, naturally, I had to whip one up of my own.
Now I don't profess to be any sort of banjo player... in fact, I've never even played one... but that's not stoppin' me...
Mind you, this is the first attempt - I've got a few more tins I've been collecting so I'll hopefully improve upon this one but this is what I came up with.... sorry for the grainy/dark video.... just used my cheap digital camera...
So, naturally, I had to whip one up of my own.

My Boy Fin Update
Fin had his staples removed on Monday - everything went great - the vet told us to keep him quiet for three more days... RIGHT!
Anyway, he is doing great - he got his new stuffie - a big grunting donkey....
Come to think of it DellMarie calls me that now and again.
Anyway, not much happening this week - Tomten '09 Planning Commission Party coming up soon....

I was able to go outside in my shorts and t-shirt today... and boots!!We had like 45 degrees here.... SPRING! Bout time! Now all I gots to do is clean up all the Fin shit.... fun times....
So this last week I took Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off of work for the HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT... a tradition since about 7th grade.
I need a liver transplant due to all the booze I consumed sitting around watching hockey... cripes, if you think about it, DellMarie and I did about 20 hours of hockey watching, most of which included drinking and eating pizza... so we'll have to dry out and take the dogs for extra walks I guess.
We also run our annual HS Hockey Board, of which I came in 4th place... one out of the money! DellMarie had a potential run going when she picked the upsets of Moorhead and Cretin Durham Hall but picked CDH to beat Moorhead - which didn't happen.... so alas, her points were squandered.....
Carrie finished up in third place and won a big $11.50!We had 23 entrants this year and a pot of $115....
For puppy cuteness... here's a couple pictures of Poppy....
Fin gets his staples taken out tomorrow... not sure how that will go.... we'll let you know...Hope ya'll have a good week!

Our Big Excitement of the Week
On Tuesday we brought our boy Fin in to get neutered... poor boy...
so as we leave the office the vet tech says to us - we won't call unless something isn't going well.
We get home and about 20 minutes later the phone rings.... its the vet....
"nothing is wrong, Fin is doing fine, we were just wondering if you would like him to have gastroplexy surgery while we do his neuter," she says.
Gastroplexy is where they go in and tack the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent it from twisting or flipping, which deep chested dogs like Fin have a propensity of doing. If the stomach flips, blood supply is cut of to it and other organs and its cash in the chips time.... so after a short conversation about growing a money tree or laundering the money we have, we agree to have it done.
Everything went fine and he came home the same afternoon pretty doped up... we were feeling the same way after paying the $800+ bill.... but he's way worth it! Here he is that evening in bed totally zonked.... (he always sleeps under the covers... no lie!)
It took about a half of the next day to get him back to totally normal. He is doing great... maybe to well... the vet said to keep him "quiet" for two weeks.... and DellMarie says, "can he come live with you for two weeks then?" HA.
So, just for sake of saying you saw the resulting 17 staples from a gastroplexy on a great dane the other day,.... here is a pic....
